Evidence/activity/anecdote:

All of the units and lessons that our team plans are directly tied into the standards and benchmarks. We continually ask ourselves, “What do the students need to learn.” To measure and report student learning, two of the methods I use are teacher and student generated rubrics and annotation sheets that spell out the expectations of an assignment and project. I have included a rubric for a narrative writing assignment and diagnostic letter writing annotation sheet.

Impact on student’s learning:

I show many of the rubrics before I even start a draft or a project. That way kids know the directions and expectations of the assignment. Students will strive to reach the top. Students also complete self-assessments at the end of units. It is very powerful for a student to reflect on his/her learning and to help decide on their next learning steps.
